Review – One Call Away by Emily Goodwin

Review graphic

I started and ended this book the same way…. in the ugliest of tears and sobbing. The first time in agony from pain and unthinkable loss. A life full of amazing potential taken way too soon. The last in elation from seeing a leading lady embrace her life and love so fully, so completely that it made my heart shutter in my chest. This story was worth the couple of nights of missed sleep, running down my phone to read those last few paragraphs. Sierra and Chase were simply stunning from beginning to end.

Sierra is not like the rest of her family. The rich farm Belmont family of the small town of Summer Hill in Mississippi. She knows that she cannot be a farmer’s wife but was prepared to be a doctor’s wife. She loved Jake. He was her world, until he is taken away. Lost in grief for a year and a half, Sierra is barely surviving. Her job at the local bookstore is her haven, a place where she can get lost. But no matter what, she can’t feel.

Chase Henson has always been looking for a place to belong, a place to call his own. His return to Mississippi is welcomed by his brother but looked upon with suspicion by the rest of the town’s people and bitter anger by his stepmother. After burying their father, Chase decides to stay and give his brother a hand at his bar. It was supposed to be temporary but then he sees Sierra Belmont and everything changes. For the first time he sees someone like him – unsettled, lost, and hurting. Someone looking for home.

Their journey towards a happy life together is far from easy. There is unbearable grief, secrets from the past, and small town gossip. Interfering relatives and well meaning friends. On the flip side of that coin, there’s a white hot chemistry that cannot be denied, a friendship built on the love of books and a second chance to live and love – not just simply survive. Yes, to feel again. It was impossible not to get swept up into these two. They began with such an uncertainty and moved on to something so unique. Chase is fierce and determined to see Sierra happy. Sierra knows that her happiness is finally within reach thanks to Chase.

This book was raw, pure emotion. It was angst and hearbreak, healing and resilience. I was left stunned and overjoyed. The story is so engaging and thought provoking that it was hard to step away once I started. I wanted to see how Chase would break through Sierra’s insecurities and wondered how his mysterious past would affect his future. I rooted for Sierra as she began to put her grief aside and embrace all that love had to offer. I laughed with them. I cried with them. I celebrated right along with them. This was just wonderful!

One Call Away is one of the best reads this year! Emily has written such a beautiful, thoughtful second chance romance. I already miss Summer Hill, and I certainly hope that she plans more stories from small town Mississippi. Wonderful job, Emily. All the stars and then some!

Chase Henson doesn’t play by the rules. He doesn’t let himself get attached, doesn’t stay in one place long enough to call anywhere home. So when he returns to the small town of Summer Hill for the first time in years, the last thing he expects to find is a reason to stay.

Sierra Belmont is lost. Devastated after a sudden tragedy that left her heart broken in a million pieces, Sierra is just barely getting by. Burying herself in work at Summer Hill’s only bookstore, all she wants to do is make it through another day.

And then Chase walks through the doors of The Book Bag, claiming he’s just there to buy a book. Rumors that he’s dangerous fly through the town, but Sierra isn’t afraid of him. He might be the last person she should be with, but he’s the only one who understands the depth of her pain. For the first time, Chase stands still, fighting the desperation to mend Sierra’s broken heart.

Always running, the past has never had a chance to catch up to Chase. But there’s a first time for everything.

Review – Without Merit by Colleen Hoover

Without Merit by Colleen Hoover

My rating: 6 of 5 stars

“Not every mistake deserves a consequence. Sometimes the only thing a mistake deserves is forgiveness.”

Merit. Such a simple word that carries the weight of a thousand books and lives. A word that means worthy. A word that defines each of Colleen Hoover’s creative culminations, novels but more like EMOTIONAL JOURNEYS. Colleen Hoover writes WORTHY books—masterpieces of merit—the kind that bring battles to life and slay demons, the kind of heartfelt creations that take and leave pieces of hearts and souls inside each story that this creator touches. Without Merit is more worthy than gold.

Colleen Hoover returns to Young Adult romance in Without Merit, a tale that is as MOMENTOUS as it is MOVING. In a small-town Texas setting lives the extremely unusual Voss family, a group of eccentric, extremely complex, and emotionally numb members. Told through the perspective of the teenage daughter, Merit, this novel takes a deep dive into family dynamics, uncovering secrets and setting the truth free.

Without Merit is so personal that it felt like an invasion upon reading. Deep. Dynamic. Devastatingly beautiful. Without Merit connected to me from the start, one that tore at my heart. I WAS RENDERED POWERLESS to this story’s power—its force—that awakened everything inside of me.

Merit is the beautiful, bold, but jaded teen heroine. She is wise beyond her years. Stuck in a family where secrets are buried and truths need to be set free, Merit seeks an escape that she finds in Sagan.

“Of all the places we could be, we’re right here. At the same time.”

Sagan is gorgeous, smart, witty, and perceptive. He beacon of light in Merit’s dark world. Sagan has a compassionate soul and I felt him soar through my soul. This hero has been through his own hell but is a survivor. Oh did I ADMIRE and love this young man!!!

He takes a step closer to me and it suddenly feels like I’ve swallowed his heart because I have all these extra beats in my chest.

Merit and Sagans’ chemistry is UNDENIABLE. This hero and heroine are drawn together like a moth to a flame. Two broken souls searching for solace. Two broken hearts longing to become whole. Two beautiful souls connected by feels and perhaps fate.

He smiles and whispers, “You bury me.”

Without Merit‘s wielding words BURIED ME—burying my heart deep inside them. I felt each one pierce me—penetrating me like a deep kiss. The intensity of this heartfelt book burned through me like fire. Poignant. Passionate. Powerful.

“I just wish you could like yourself as much as I like you.”

These words … they SHOOK MY SOUL! I was GUTTED, as Without Merit gripped my heart and tore it apart!!! Without Merit HITS THE HEART SO HARD, a tornado striking the soul.

I bled tears for the hero, Sagan, but mostly for the heroine, Merit, who is worth everything. This fractured family FELT REAL. A family with so many skeletons buried beneath the surface. A family with whom Colleen Hoover connects the reader so intimately. A family whose pain is felt. A family desperately needing to be saved. A family I wanted to save because they felt so close where I shared such a strong connection that the Voss members felt like mine…my close-knit clan that I rooted for until the end.

Through her powerful and poignant words, Colleen Hoover courageously uncovers social topics and serious issues like depression. This compassionate writer tackles tough matters rather than brushing them under the rug. I can’t love Colleen Hoover more for slaying serious subjects through her writing—meeting them head on—and making them her muses.

I LOVE that Colleen Hoover doesn’t write easy love. She writes complicated love, the kind that challenges you, the kind for which you have to work, stripping the soul bare, and laying everything on the line. There is no greater reward than reaching the end of a messy, hard-fought love story. Colleen Hoover is masterful at penning messy love. Colleen Hoover writes messy love at its best!

Without Merit is a family saga threaded with a coming-of-age love story, one I LIVED … FELT … LOVED. I felt every emotion that the hero and heroine felt; their devastatingly beautiful love story was MINE. I lost myself in Without Merit, vanishing into this life-altering story, SPELLBOUND, as it seized every part of me: body, heart, and soul. An evocative and emotionally-wound journey of heartbreak and healing, Without Merit leaves a lasting mark on the soul. I know my soul is marked for life.

I wanted it all. I wanted to feel everything.

WITHOUT MERIT IS WORTH EVERYTHING!!!! A TOP 2017 ROMANCE!!!

Not every mistake deserves a consequence. Sometimes the only thing it deserves is forgiveness.

The Voss family is anything but normal. They live in a repurposed church, newly baptized Dollar Voss. The once cancer-stricken mother lives in the basement, the father is married to the mother’s former nurse, the little half-brother isn’t allowed to do or eat anything fun, and the eldest siblings are irritatingly perfect. Then, there’s Merit.

Merit Voss collects trophies she hasn’t earned and secrets her family forces her to keep. While browsing the local antiques shop for her next trophy, she finds Sagan. His wit and unapologetic idealism disarm and spark renewed life into her—until she discovers that he’s completely unavailable. Merit retreats deeper into herself, watching her family from the sidelines when she learns a secret that no trophy in the world can fix.

Fed up with the lies, Merit decides to shatter the happy family illusion that she’s never been a part of before leaving them behind for good. When her escape plan fails, Merit is forced to deal with the staggering consequences of telling the truth and losing the one boy she loves.

Review – Theirs To Take  by laura Kaye

4.5 stars
I have been a huge fan of the blasphemy series since the beginning. This book was so much different than the rest of the books  in the series. It was a little lighter on the BDSM side and more emotional.
I loved how Hartley, Cruz , and Jonathan started their relationship and it built quickly while they we’re closely working on Hartley’s boat even though they had no  time for extra jobs. Jonathan just had an instant connection with her. When Cruz met her,  he felt it too.
The other catch to the story is that Jonathan and Cruz were  best friends for 20 years and both had a desire for the other that they we’re both keeping under wraps for fear that that it would ruin their relationship.
Overall,  another great read from Laura  and the Blasphemy series. I highly recommend. BTW it gets a 10 for heat factor!

 From Laura Kaye:

I’m thrilled to be celebrating the release of my super hot and emotional Theirs to Take, the next erotic standalone romance in my Blasphemy series, about the twelve Masters who run and play at Baltimore’s most exclusive club. Theirs to Take is a sexy menage about what happens when two prior navy best friends and business partners meet a woman who makes them admit to desires they’ve never before voice. I think you’re going to love Jonathan and Cruz! I know I adored writing them! Even more fun, there are characters and scenes in Theirs to Take that cross over with the amazing Jennifer Probst’s brand new Reveal Me – and the best part is that both are standalones so you can dive right in!

Now, read in for a taste of Theirs to Take…

Hartley woke up to the image of Jonathan’s handsome face mere inches from her own. She smiled, because in the peace of sleep, he appeared younger, and she could almost imagine him at eighteen, tanned with sun-streaked hair, racing into the waves, a board under his arm.

But she didn’t want the boy he’d been. She wanted the man he was now. She peered up over Cruz’s ridged stomach at his ruggedly handsome face and the tribal black ink running down his upper arms. Yeah, she wanted the men that both of them were. Sailors, veterans, builders, friends. Men so confident in their sexuality that they could share a woman with another man.

At least, she wanted to explore this thing between them. It wasn’t just that the sex had been amazing—which it had—it was that they’d made her feel so damn special. More than that, they’d made her feel a part of something bigger than herself. For the first time in so long.

And that feeling combined with being surrounded by all this sexy, hard flesh had arousal stirring in her blood again. It was like that dream she’d had, only better. Because this was real.

She shifted, and Jonathan’s eyes blinked open. One side of his mouth lifted in a little smile. “Hey,” he whispered.

“Hey,” she whispered back. Mentally, she debated, and then she decided to follow Scarlett’s advice once more. Just go for it. “Tell me…tell me to do something.”

He arched a brow, heat chasing the lazy sleepiness from his gaze. “You need us again.”

It wasn’t a question, which made his words about a million times hotter. He understood what she was asking him. “Yes,” she said.

“Then suck Cruz’s cock,” he whispered.

The command made her pussy clench with need. Wanting to wake Cruz up with her mouth, not movement, she shifted as gingerly as she could. And then she took his cock into her mouth and tongued and sucked him until he grew against her tongue.

“Eyes on me,” Jonathan said. She complied readily, hungrily. “That’s it. Make him hard.” His hand stroked the back of her hair, each stroke a little more firm than the last. As if to let her know that he could hold her down on that cock at any time.

Annnd that thought had her suddenly wet between her legs.

“Fuck,” Cruz rasped, stirring beneath her. His hand fell against her head, too.

A moan spilled from her. She loved the feeling of both of them guiding her mouth.

“She likes our hands in her hair, Cruz,” Jonathan said, eyes locked on hers. “Don’t you?” She nodded as much as she could with her mouth full.

Now Cruz was the one groaning, and Hartley couldn’t help but thrust her hips against the bed.

“God, I want to fuck her mouth, Jonathan.”

“Would you like that, Hartley?” A fist in her hair, he urged her head up. “Tell me.”

“Yes,” she said, wound incredibly tight from just a few moments of their dominance. “I would love that.”

“Then tell him. Tell Cruz to fuck your mouth.” Jonathan’s stare was dark fire.
