Review – The Brave Line by Kate Stewart

The Brave Line by Kate Stewart

My heart is pounding.

My palms are sweaty.

My skin is tingling.

My soul is singing.

Everything inside me is on fire.

I am ridiculously happy. Floating high on a mighty blissful cloud of EPIC bookworm feels! I’m struggling to find words. I’m struggling to fully describe how perfect this story is. I don’t know how to really make sense of all my feelings in a way where people will understand. I’ve read all of Kate Stewart’s books and this book is without doubt her best yet. The Brave Line is OUTSTANDING

Everything about The Brave Line will just burn you to the core. It will cover every base, tick every single box and steal every part of your heart. I kid you not, you will FEEL IT ALL. There is no emotion you will not experience. When a book can be heart breaking but heart warming all at the same time you just know you’ve got yourself a winner.

The Brave Line follows Michelle and Rowdy. I cannot begin to tell you how amazing these two are as individuals AND together. Both are incredibly broken, heavily influenced by very different pasts. Yet they are sensational in every way possible.

Michelle was a surprise to me. I never expected a character with such depth. Michelle stole my heart, almost immediately. I didn’t care that she wasn’t always perfect. I didn’t care that she had flaws and she wore them on her sleeve. I simply didn’t care because to me, Kate wrote her in a way that was understandable. We follow Michelle, we learn her past, we learn her pain and it made me FEEL for her, love her.

I’m not sure where to begin with Rowdy. Everything I want to say about him would probably mean I was here until the end of time. I loved him that much. The guy attached himself onto my soul and wouldn’t budge. But then I wouldn’t want him too either. Rowdy is beautifully broken, built from devastation and pain. His hard exterior mixed with his want and need for better made him undeniably perfect. Rowdy rocked my world with his wicked ways and sinful mouth. Imagine my delight when the hot cop was also a dirty one. *praise hands* Even when Rowdy was being a total royal pain in the butt I adored him. Like Michelle I was drawn to him. And will remain drawn to him indefinitely.

Together though, together they consumed me. Together they wrecked me. Together they made me so happy. Nothing came easy for them, yet they worked. This book didn’t need any unnecessary drama from outside sources, Rowdy and Michelle had enough personal roadblocks to deal with and here is where Kate played on the passion and intensity of the characters. The relationship between them is tense and raw while being incredibly hot, but it’s also devastating and I spent so much time WISHING, FEELING, getting wayyy too emotional over the fact that their heartbreak was stopping them from finally being happy.
But by the end, the powerful, heartbreaking journey that I’d been on ended on the most blissful high. I’m not sure whether I devoured this book or it devoured me. My heart and soul have been tugged around, broken and rebuilt impeccably. I am so in love with this book that I don’t want to pick up another. I’ll happily remain in hungover state for a while. And no, I won’t feel bad about it, because The Brave Line is flawless perfection and will undoubtedly be one of my top reads of 2017.

She is a five foot seven long list of things he can’t have.

He is a determined cop, desperate to keep his heart sealed behind his badge.

Michelle is a survivor. With a fresh perspective on life, she trades her tragic past in California for the coastal waters of Charleston. Fueled by a new career as a dispatcher, she’s determined not to let her scars weigh her down. She apologizes for nothing, especially her insatiable need for a certain police officer.

Rowdy is a newly minted sergeant dedicated to his job, but the life of a Charleston police officer has never been more dangerous. With his need to take order of a city spiraling out of control, the last thing he wants is an entanglement with a mouthy dispatcher. But, there’s just one problem. He can’t get enough of her.

As the heat rises between the unlikely pair, so does the tension.

Three months of summer was all it took to shake their foundations, rattle their walls, and bring them crashing down.

It was lust.

It was love.

It was real.

And it would have been perfect . . . if it wasn’t already over.

Note to reader:

This book has several elements and explores topics that some may consider triggers. For mature audiences only. Explicit sex, violence and language.

Review-Dishonorable by Natasha Knight

My rating is 5 out of 5 stars

This was a solid 5 star read that was riveting and captivating. You would’ve had to pry my kindle out of my hands to make me put it down for even a second. Emotions run high in this book, and your emotions will constantly fluctuate with the story.

Raphael is a man you love to hate. He appears ruthless, cold, and calculated, but the good wants to break through so badly. It’s a real struggle between battling his demons and moving on to see that he deserves so much more. You will find yourself hating him one minute and your heart breaking for him the next. I absolutely loved his character.

Sophia was pretty much ripped from her childhood. Just turning 18 and still naive to the world, her grandfather hands her off as a business deal to marry who appears to be a monster. Watching how quickly she matured and came into her own even at the young age of 18 was remarkable. She was such a strong character and I love that in a female lead.

There is never a dull moment in this story. I truly hope to see a story for Damon and Lina. I really fell in love with both of them as well. Such an amazing and sizzling hot read.

Sofia

I knew little of Raphael Amado’s history with my family, but when he turned up on our doorstep demanding restitution, my grandfather quickly conceded. That restitution? Me.

Six months later, on my eighteenth birthday, Raphael came for me. He stole me from my home, taking me to his Tuscan estate, where from the crumbling chapel to the burnt-down vineyard, to the cellar that haunted him, the past stalked him like a shadow. It waited for him, hid behind corners for him and trapped him at every turn.

As much as Raphael’s cruelty terrified me, his darkness seduced me. But in the end, it was his tenderness that devastated me.

Raphael

Sofia came to me like an offering. Like a virgin to be sacrificed at the altar. But truth was, her grandfather betrayed her. I guess we had that in common. He’d screwed me too.

I knew hate. I’d vowed vengeance. This was never supposed to be about anything else. But in the end, her innocence broke me. The very thing I would destroy, destroyed me.

 EXCERPT:
After the evening in Civitella in Val di Chiana, I doubted Sofia would appreciate that we’d be married in the Basilica of Santa Croce in Florence, alongside the resting places of Michelangelo, Galileo and Machiavelli, before the eyes of God and a handful of witnesses and fucking throngs of tourists. Tourists were unavoidable this time of year. I could almost tolerate them.

It had taken an exorbitant contribution to book the basilica, but it only concretized my thinking. Money was what everything came down to and that included the church. But I had to admit, this was a magnificent display of devotion and art, even if it was wasted.

I stood at the altar, waiting for my bride. The rope did little to keep curious visitors at bay. Beside me stood Eric as witness and another man arranged by my attorney. I didn’t know who he was. In the front pew sat Sofia’s grandfather, the great Marcus Guardia, his expression unreadable. At his side sat Lina. Smaller than Sofia but not by much. As pretty as her. The old man had kept his end of the bargain after I’d signed the amended contract. Across the aisle sat Maria. I hadn’t invited anyone else to the wedding.

About two dozen strangers, worshippers who most likely were not expecting a wedding, dotted the other pews, giving the appearance of being guests. The priest cleared his throat and made a show of checking his watch.

It took another five minutes before the doors were opened, and someone stepped in to signal the music. The organist began to play the wedding march, and I took a moment to straighten my tie. I’d worn black on black. It was fitting.

Two men secured the large doors of the worshippers’ entrance. From the waning sunlight outside, I could make out the two forms, the white of the dress casting a sort of halo around Sofia. Beside her stood my brother. My fucking brother. Tall and proud in his suit, Sofia’s arm tucked into his. I could almost see him patting it, telling her it would be all right. Reassuring her when he had no business to.

I didn’t know when she’d asked him to walk her down the aisle. I understood she didn’t want her grandfather. That made perfect sense. But this? It pissed me off, actually.

The organist started the march again, and they took their first steps. Once they stepped fully into the church, I could make out their faces. My brother, for all his support of a few nights ago, now condemned me with his gaze. I wondered how much he knew. How much she’d told him.

Sofia gazed at the floor. Her veil shielded her from me until she was about a third of the way down the aisle. That was when she hesitated. Damon paused too, then whispered something to her. She seemed to take a full minute to compose herself, and before my very eyes, she straightened, standing taller, her spine straighter. She looked directly at me.

I met her gaze, felt the unnatural chill inside her eyes, accepted the accusations she threw like grenades. But she had never looked more beautiful to me than in that moment.

The dress fit as if it were made for her, hugging her delicate curves, the antique veil with yellowing edges not quite concealing her but adding an almost ethereal air to her, to her beauty. Her hair had been intricately braided, only a few soft strands falling around her face, over her shoulder, and her golden eyes shone as if covered over by a layer of ice crystals.

She never shifted her gaze. Never faltered again as Damon walked her toward me. As he faced her, the look they exchanged made me fist my hands at my sides. It wasn’t attraction or affection, not more than that of friendship, but it seemed as though a bond had been formed between them, and I knew in the way he looked at me, the way he looked at her, that he knew what had happened between us. What would happen still.

I hated him for it in that moment. I hated him for having something of her that I did not. That I never would.

My brother lifted her veil and gave her a gentle smile, a kiss on the cheek. A whispered word. I’d fucking kill him for it.

He then turned her to me.

Tears didn’t shine in her eyes. Her lip didn’t tremble. When she looked up at me, all I saw was hate. A hate that came from betrayal. From a budding trust destroyed.

And in spite of it, or perhaps because of it, she took my breath away.

I turned her toward the altar and stood quietly by her side, listening to her breathe, listening to the priest but not hearing his words. Hearing her quiet “I do.” Speaking my own. Catching the slight tremble of her hand as she handed her bouquet of blackest lilies—appropriate if not dramatic—to my brother, who remained by her side. She then faced me again, and I took her hand. From my pocket I retrieved her wedding band. A ring of thorns made of iron, black and rounded to slide onto her finger, jagged to remind her of her place.

She looked down at it once it was fully seated on her delicate finger, and I wondered what thoughts circled her mind.

The priest cleared his throat, and I wanted to slap him. To tell him to give her time. To let us be.

Sofia met my gaze. I handed her my ring. She took it, and I held out my left hand. As she slid the serrated ring onto my finger, she gasped, hesitating at the sudden sight of blood, faltering.

Her mouth fell open, her eyes wide when she met mine.

“Do it,” I said.

She shifted her gaze back to my hand and dragged the spiked band upward, her eyes now fixated on the lines of red that appeared along my finger. The first dark droplet fell, soiling the snow-white of her dress, and when she pulled her stained fingers away, she looked up at me again, the ice in her eyes different, less cold. Confused now. Lost.

Lost again.

I gripped the back of her neck and forced her attention back to the priest who had gone a little pale at the blood.

“Finish it,” I spat.

He met my gaze, swallowed, fumbled with his Bible—fucking idiot—and then pronounced us husband and wife.

I kissed my bride with a hunger that would devour her. A warning to her. A promise of what would come.

Review – Her Best Friend’s Dad by Penny Wylder

Her Best Friend's Dad

Review graphic

I was so looking forward to this story! Penny Wylder is certainly becoming the master of the forbidden and taboo… and I’m loving everything that she’s written. This is her first full length novel, and it did not disappoint. It was steamy, a lot dirty and just an all around fun read!

Lia is a starving artist and after losing her studio has to come home to live with her beloved father and wicked stepmother. Her saving grace is her very best friend Tasha. She’s her light in the darkness but then there’s Tasha’s father. The delicious and totally forbidden Beck Huntsworth. He is everything that Lia wants and simply cannot have. She’s always crushed on her best friend’s dad and now that school girl crush has become a grown woman’s desire. Still, Lia made a promise to her best friend to stay away from Beck… and that promise is getting harder and harder to keep.

Beck Huntsworth has watched Lia grow up to become a beautiful young woman. Smart, talented and in need of someone to love her and care for her. He knows that it’s wrong to want her. After all this is his daughter’s best friend! Totally forbidden but a temptation he cannot stay away from. He wants her, HAS to have her no matter the consequences.

When Lia is given the opportunity to work for Beck in his company, can they resist temptation and their growing feelings?

The attraction between Lia and Beck is so steamy! Beck is one sexy silver fox with such dedication to his daughter. But Lia calls to him in a way that he never dreamt possible. Lia may be young – maybe TOO young for Beck – but she knows that she could never have what she has with Beck with anyone else. I admired her love and devotion to Tasha. For so long they only had each other, but love cannot be stopped. Lia and Beck want each other and that want could leave a lot of people hurt.

This was a great afternoon read! The story is wonderfully paced with juicy love scenes with two strong willed and determined characters. There were moments of heartfelt angst and even some belly laughs! The secondary charaters made this book even more fun to read! Penny has created a truly fantastic book!

5 Forbidden Love Stars!

5-kisses

I’m falling for my best friend’s dad.

Moving back home was never my plan. Except here I am, struggling under my evil step-mom’s crushing thumb while I look for work. I feel just like Cinderella, but I never expected my best friend’s DAD to be my prince.
He’s just as hot now as he was when I was a teen; maybe hotter. He’s also rich and powerful, and when he offers me a job working under him at his company… I can’t say no. I don’t WANT to say no.
All our flirting is bad enough–we can’t get caught, my best friend would hate me–but then we go too far.
Hiding our relationship was one thing…
How the hell do I hide a baby?

Penny Wylder’s first full length novel! It’s all the fun and filth you expect, just a lot more of it! This story has a romantic core and a happily ever after that will make you melt.

beautiful sexy couple. gorgeous blond woman and handsome man

excerpt

It isn’t proper for me to want my daughter’s best friend, a woman I’ve watched grow into an astonishing beauty. There is just something magic about Lia, something that makes my whole body throb with the need to get closer. She could easily become addictive. I know I should resist any temptation affecting me this strongly, but then I had to go and hire her.

What the fuck was I thinking? I am going to lose my mind, or at least my promise to myself to never sleep with an employee. Maybe that’s why the second thing I did after Lia left was call Jean last night. If Lia is my employee, I can do my damnedest to keep my rule. It would give me a buffer against the feelings that are already going well beyond lust and into a dangerous territory from just one encounter. Lia makes me hungry. It is more than lust; it is the hunger to provide for her, not in a paternal way, but to see that all her dreams are made reality. I know that Jean is not the nicest to her and never has been, and if it wouldn’t make things worse, I would throw my weight around as Jean’s boss to fix that. Jean is a great member of the R&D team, but not so much that I would be sad to see her go if it meant making Lia happy. It’s an employer’s market right now with more applicants than jobs. She would be easily replaced.

It is a dangerous move, I know, to bring Lia in as my secretary. I know she is the forbidden fruit, and that maybe this is my mid-life crisis starting to hit me, but I want her. “I need her,” I tell my reflection. “I have to have—”

“Mr. Huntsworth, your new office assistant has finished with human resources.” My chief of security sounds amused as his voice plays from the speaker on my desk.

She’s on her way up. The thought repeats itself in time with the aching in my cock.

“You wanted me to call you when she was being shown her way to the executive office floor.” The line goes silent. My fingernail catches on the red disc of a call button beside the vanity in my bathroom. I press it, wait for Brian to answer, and then thank him for the notice. There’s no time for me to get my libido in check, so the best I can do is sit down at my desk to hide the reaction Lia evokes from me.

I wait at my desk—one minute becomes two, and then it’s soon five minutes before I hear muffled voices outside of the security clearance down the hall. I try to focus on the paperwork in front of me. The chirp of a badge being swiped lights up a blue LED on the panel beside my phone, giving me a warning that someone will be entering. Only a handful of people have clearance to get in here, and most of those require the security guard in the hall or someone inside to buzz them in. I look up.

Lia stands before me, shifting her weight from one foot to the other. “Hi.” Her voice trembles before she steels herself and repeats it more surely. “Do I call you Mr. Huntsworth?” She has her head tilted down, and she looks up at me through the sweeping edge of her bangs. Her lips part, and the tip of her tongue glosses over them. She’s nervous, and I selfishly hope it’s because of me.

“Beck is fine unless I happen to be in a meeting. ‘Sir’ works too,” I tease.
Lia blushes before rolling her eyes. She even does that artfully. “Thank you for the job,
Beck.”

The way she says my name makes my cock throb. “I should be thanking you for accepting it, Lia.” I stand and offer her my hand. Her fingers are cool as they slip into my palm, and the shake we share is anything but innocent despite the chaste touch. I want her grip to be lower and firmer, and with the quick dropping of her eyes, I sense that her thoughts are moving in the same direction.

Review – Endurance by Amy Daws

Endurance by Amy Daws

Endurance by Amy Daws, is another great instalment in her series of sporty standalones that have the HOTTEST covers!!

When I started Endurance, I wasn’t sure I was going to like it, I liked the hero but really couldn’t connect to the heroine at all. And as a Brit myself,  I thought some of the British references were slightly over the top and as a whole just wasn’t feeling it. I kept reading and at 40% I began to get those delicious tummy flutters. Everything seemed to flip for me at this point and draw me deeper into the story.

From this point I began to connect to the characters and really, really enjoy where Amy took them. You could say I fell in love right alongside them. Their connection sizzled through me, the angsty pull of their love/hate feelings pushed and pulled at me. I ended up feeling at home in this story.
I went the distance with Endurance and I’m so glad I did!

4 “I LOVE your crazy” stars.

Tanner Harris has been busy shagging his way through the ladies of east London, but getting caught by the paparazzi buck-naked with his trouser snake in his hands means he’s sowed his last wild oat.

Dr. Belle Ryan once thought Tanner Harris was the perfect kind of bearded bad boy she needed to relieve a bit of stress after her intense job as a surgical fellow, but an icy cold rejection from London’s sluttiest footballer puts the two at each other’s throats.

Fate and a favour conspire to put Tanner and Belle back in each other’s paths and they’re forced to do a lot more than get along to save face and their careers.

Rage turns to passion and tempers run sizzling hot when they realise they aren’t just falling for each other—they’re jumping head first. And neither have the endurance to keep their hands to themselves.

Review – Hero Hair by Rachel Robinson

Hero Hair by Rachel Robinson

Holy Moly. I don’t know how Rachel Robinson does it? Hero Hair was nothing like I’d thought it would be. I wasn’t expecting my heart to pound as hard as it did. I wasn’t expecting my mind would spin as much as it did. I wasn’t expecting the halts in my breathing. I was not expecting to FEEL as many different emotion that I did.

In Hero Hair the player gets played. And I’m not even talking about the hero. The heroine is as big a player as our lead guy. And I LOVED that!! It was refreshing to have two characters who were exactly the same, in life, with love and at playing the game.

The dynamic of our lead character’s relationship is set out flawlessly. I couldn’t have asked for better. The whole story line flows so perfectly that I was swept away in a blossoming romance that was light and fun but oh so freaking hot. I mean, HOLY WOAH! Macs & Teala are hotter than the burning flame. Their connectivity and intensity blasts out the pages and just catapults itself all over your body, causing heat prickles and tummy sloshes OF THE BEST KIND. They are filthy, dirty, raw, smutty creatures and I LOVED EVERY SINGLE PART OF IT!
At 66%, something flipped in the story and my love for it solidified. Don’t get me wrong, I was already in love with Hero Hair but at this point, at 66%, I fell head over heels, into deep, intense love with it.

This was also the point where Rachel flipped everything on its head and just made it MORE. All of a sudden it was even more consuming, I mean it killed me to stop reading to update my Goodreads progress! All of a sudden everything was more intense and more heart poundingly, brilliant. The suspense and rawness of what was happening held me on the edge of my seat. Everything in my body flamed hotter, my tummy continued its onslaught of even bigger sloshes and my emotions WERE A MESS.

Hero Hair took me on a brutal, breathtaking adventure. One that caused me to shut everything else out because I literally couldn’t drag myself away. Everything was executed with perfection and brilliance. Everything was executed with passion and sincerity. Hero Hair was EVERYTHING. I can’t rate higher than 5 stars but if I could, Hero Hair would definitely take 10!

Everyone knows there is no “I” in team, but to Macs Newstead–orgasm-gifting, muscle-filled Navy SEAL hero–there are more important words than team. Words like victory and vanity and selfishness. People say those words like they are a bad thing, but to Macs, they’re simply tools in his highly effective arsenal. When a man’s entire existence revolves around the necessity to end lives, silly, mundane things like second dates or monogamy seem worthy sacrifices.

Downward facing dog or doggy-style–it’s all the same to Teala Smart, a whip-smart yoga instructor. She owns her studio like she owns her life–with focus, positive energy, and pure devotion. That devotion, however, does not trickle into her love life (or more accurately, her lust life.) Relationships are a roadblock to her success. They get in the way and tangle up emotions more than the lotus pose tangles up limbs. Men are best kept just for a night and then released into the wild before feelings get too messy.

HERO HAIR, the second novel of International Bestselling Author Rachel Robinson’s THE REAL SEAL SERIES, is the account of an life-altering journey detailing the awakening of two hollow hearts, both set on taking their own pleasures without any emotional attachment. The ruthless SEAL finally meets an enemy he can’t defeat, and both Macs and Teala find, against their wishes, and despite atrocious circumstances, a chemistry so explosive it leaves nothing but deconstructing love in its wake.

Review- Stay Awhile by Gia Riley

My rating is 6 out of 5 stars

Gia, I am literally a sobbing mess right now. What you did with this book was just off the charts incredible. I laughed. I cried. I fell completely and utterly in love with Garrett from square 1. I don’t think I’ve ever read a book with a man like him. He is in his own special class. No one can even come close to how he overtook my entire heart from the start.

So many twists. So many turns. So much heartache. So much utter despair. One man who can soothe a little girl more than her own father. He is no alpha, which makes this book so much different than most books. I know alphas are usually but we all want, but Garrett may have just  created a whole new breed of the perfect man.
My heart goes out to Megan and Laney for all the hurt they’ve had thrown their way over and over. One can only take so much before they break.Laney is one sweet precious angel that stole my heart.

You think you know what’s going on and then the whole script is flipped, and I found myself grabbing my throat and gasping so many times. There’s no.other way to write this review than to describe the emotional journey you’re about to embark upon when you start at page 1. The ending just had me reading with my jaw dropped to the floor. I hope their will be a new story formed out of that ending and that’s all I’m saying.
This writing was impeccable. Easily a 6 star review. Definitely one of my top reads this year. You all are gonna want to jump on this one immediately. I promise you its worth every single second.

Bookalicious Babes Blog Exclusive Cover Reveal – Her Russian Knight by Red Phoenix

Official Her Russian Knight cover

Take a peek into the sensual world of BDSM…

Her Russian Knight by Red Phoenix is coming March 27th!

Rytsar Durov is a sadist—and he’s upset. He just sent Tono Nosaka packing

and is about to confront Master Brad Anderson. Bones may be broken.

The Russian Dom is a force unto himself, and he intends to take care of the threat once and for all.

No one touches radost moya. NO ONE!

Nothing fazes this sexy Russian Dom, but how will he cope when he finds out the tragedy

that’s befallen his comrade—the only man he calls Brother?

excerpt

Rytsar grasped her head with both hands and lowered it so he could kiss her firmly on the top of the head. “What you do not realize, Tatianna, is that I will make sweet, sensual love to this mind. Every thought will become mine, not because I demand it, but because you will be hopelessly devoted to me.”

Her eyes shone with the enthusiasm of young love, and she tentatively took his hand and placed it on her right breast. “Make love to me, Anton.”

Rytsar had to check himself. What she was asking was exactly what his entire body ached for, but he could not succumb to the temptation.

Tatianna deserved to be swept off her feet, and that was exactly what he planned to do. After a day of being treated like a princess for her birthday, then—and only then—would he claim her virginity.

Rytsar took the Durov family ring off his pinky and slipped it onto her delicate finger. “The day I ask for this ring back is the day I will make love to you, Tatianna. It is my solemn vow.”

Tatianna stared at it, knowing it’s worth and significance to Rytsar. His grandfather had gifted him the ancestral ring, passing over his father and older brothers to do it. Although it had created animosity with his kin, Rytsar treasured this symbol of his grandfather’s belief in him. He was not a product of his current lineage—his reputation and destiny was his alone to forge.

This was my digest book by this author. Since M/M is my favorite genre I jumped right in this one. Ruth did such an amazing job bringing these characters to life.
I don’t want to give much away so this review will be a little different than normal. It’s on a whole new level of awesome. It’s emotional, heartbreaking, heart mending, and don’t forget hot.
Facing these demons made fall and fall hard. Thank you for putting such beautiful words to paper Ruth. Absolutely incredible.

Unforgiven, an all-new sexy and emotional M/M love story from Ruth Clampett available now!!
Unforgiven by Ruth Clampett

Publication Date: March 9th, 2017

Genre: Contemporary Romance
Would you live a lie to hold onto the one you love?
Dean and Jason are best friends, like brothers since boyhood, now architecture students and college roommates. They’ve always had each other’s back, but when one walks in on the other with another man, everything changes. How do you explain to your best friend that he’s the one you’ve always wanted, that until now your life has been a lie?
Desperation and shame are two dirty words that run through Jason’s veins. He carries the scars from a wayward priest who stole his innocence and left him shattered. Meanwhile for years he’s watched Dean pursuing woman after woman, as his own heart slowly breaks.
When their world blows apart, they learn the powerful bond between them has more fire than either understood. Can two broken souls find the light in their darkness and come together to make a whole, or will sins of the past be forever unforgiven?
Excerpt
“What started all of this tonight? First I walk in on you having sex with yourself … then you grill me about having sex with Ramon … and then you suggest we have sex.” He rakes his fingers through his hair. “You’re making me crazy, dude. How much did you drink anyway?”

“Enough to loosen up and let my mind go places it normally doesn’t.”

His eyes light up. “I’ll say.”

“Hey, I’m really curious now. Will you let me fuck you? I promise I’ll follow what you want and take it slow.”

“Oh Jesus. Are you serious? So more experimenting, huh?”

“I think it’ll help me understand more about you.”

“You know when I said I needed more, this isn’t exactly what I meant. Don’t get me wrong, the idea of you fucking me is making me hard as hell, but it’ll just complicate things even more.”

“It doesn’t have to complicate things. Is it really so crazy to just want to make each other feel good?” I pause for a moment. “Come on, JJ.”

Lifting myself off the bed, I slowly approach him. As I get closer, I press my naked body into him so he’s up against the doorjamb, then I boldly rub my palm over his hard cock that’s trapped in his pajama bottoms.

I take a sharp breath because I’m shocked I’m even suggesting fucking my best friend. This is crazy, but feeling myself against him and imagining him naked under me is turning me on like a rocket with a sparking fuse.

He stands frozen, every part of him perfectly still, and then he gasps for air. “Please, Dean, please tell me you aren’t toying with me.”

I press my face into his neck. “I’m not toying with you, man. I don’t know what’s happening to me, but I have all these confusing feelings and my curiosity is through the roof. I’ve been so damn restless lately, and suddenly I have a feeling that if I turn a corner, I might find myself right where I need to be.”

Jason slides his arm along my lower back and curves his fingers around my side, then pulls me closer. “Don’t make me hope for something, and then crush me. I wouldn’t be able to take it. Our friendship means everything to me. It’s why I’m still standing and fighting for a future, when for a long time I wasn’t sure if I deserved one.”

I pull my head back so we can be face to face. It guts me to see so much pain in his eyes. Why the hell didn’t I see all of this before? He’s my best friend, dammit. I should have known he was hurting.

He shakes his head. “I can’t lose you, Dean. I can’t. Tread carefully, man.” His eyes are glazed like he’s fighting back tears.

I take his hand and guide him into my room. “You aren’t going to lose me. Maybe this whole thing of me learning your secrets happened to bring us closer.”

“I want that,” he whispers, and then more softly he murmurs, “I want you.”

Exclusive Excerpt – Chapter 1 of Bossed by Sloane Howell

Jenny Jackson

Who is Ethan Mason?

I strode down the busy sidewalk like a lost child at the mall, conspicuous amidst a crowd of pedestrians who seemed to move with purpose, all knowing exactly where they were headed. Suits blew past me in every direction, all oblivious to my presence as I craned my head up, looking for any glimpse of a street sign.

Where the hell am I?

Used to living half an hour—with no traffic—outside of the large Texas city, I didn’t venture downtown much, and it certainly showed by the agitated looks of everyone who passed me. It had all happened so fast. I’d applied for a staff accounting position—one of many around town—but this was at a sports agency, Mason and Associates.

Usually, I would’ve researched the firm and done some form of due diligence, but they called me back the same day and scheduled an interview for the next morning. Today.

I rounded a corner and a park came into view across the street. In front of the park sat a mobile coffee cart, just off the main thoroughfare at the edge of the sidewalk.

Thank God.

The strong aroma from the roasted beans cut through the bevy of exhaust fumes and blaring horns sounded all around me.

A cab approached, seemingly out of nowhere, and slammed on its brakes as I
attempted to cross the street. I skidded on the heels I hadn’t worn in over a year,

teetering for balance as my hands shot up in defense.

“Sorry.”

I cringed at the string of expletives hurled by the cabbie as I gathered my wits and continued toward the heavenly scent coming from the tree-lined sidewalk just half a
block down. After I crossed the street I checked my bag and confirmed my resume was
still safely inside my portfolio along with two pens and enough paper to transcribe the

entire interview if needed.

Thinking about my resume sent me into a dark thunderstorm of self-doubt. Three
years of bookkeeping for small businesses was hardly impressive, and last I had

checked, I couldn’t list “almost a CPA if my father hadn’t become sick” as a credential.

I cleared the thought from my mind and attempted to focus. The coffee cart was calling my name and I started up the sidewalk. Large, bright-pink azalea bushes bloomed throughout and a few children squealed while their father chased after them. I halted in my tracks and smiled, remembering days like that with my dad, which now seemed a distant memory.

When I turned back to the cart, a suit and tie slammed into me, knocking my bag
to the ground. I stumbled around in a momentary daze, trying to process what had just

occurred.

“Oh my God. I’m so sorry. Please excuse me.”

I crouched down and quickly gathered all the papers that had spilled out of my bag and shoved them back in. Finally, I turned my head to meet a perfectly creased pair of black slacks, then lifted my gaze up to his face. The guy had to be mid-to-late twenties. He glared down at me with a pair of warm brown eyes, holding his phone to his ear. His hair was dark and combed back like the models who graced the covers of GQ or Style.

His lips curled into a devilish smile as my face flushed with heat at the sight of such a handsome man. It was like seeing a lion on the Discovery Channel, only live and in the flesh. Predatory men like him weren’t supposed to actually exist in day-to-day life.

His brows pinched together and he scoffed, “You’re excused.”

I was at fault. I knew this. Standing in the middle of a busy sidewalk and staring out into the park was just asking for trouble. But something about his cocky attitude and the way he spoke to me crept under my skin in the worst possible way. Pulling myself to my feet, I propped my hands on my hips, and glared at the back of his jacket as he started to walk away.

“Excuse me?”

He froze in his tracks as I eyed him from head to toe. His suit hugged him perfectly, as if it were specifically tailored to every dimension of what I imagined was the body of a Greek god. But being attractive wasn’t an excuse for being a dick, no matter how fast my heart sped up when he turned around, and his gorgeous eyes found mine again.

“Hang on a moment,” he said to whoever was on the other end of the phone.

He took a few steps that seemed to last an eternity as he neared me.

“Sorry. I thought I’d said you were excused already.”

He paused for a quick moment, then his eyes widened.

“Oh my. You’re deaf.”

He held out his hands and flawlessly signed,
You’re excused.

I knew because I’d minored in ASL in college.

Before thinking, I signed back,
You’re a fucking prick,

coupled with a smile that matched my sentiment.

He stared at me like I was an alien for another brief moment, before raking his gaze up and down my body. I clenched my fists at the shiver it sent crawling up my spine, and the heat it sent between my thighs.

“Well, aren’t you a clever one? Never would’ve guessed you had an attitude,

judging by that outfit.” He smirked.

I folded my arms across my chest and stared lasers into his eyes. The same
eyes that sent nerves skittering through my body. “Well, aren’t you—”
His hand shot out and his index finger was against my lips. “Shh.” He slid his

finger down my mouth slowly before pulling it away and pointing to his phone.

“Important phone call.”

He stared out at the park as my chest rose and fell in huge waves. My face heated to an alarming degree.

“Yeah, well don’t let them fuck up my sandwich this time. I want the condiments on the side. They get the bread all soggy.”

He cupped his hand over the phone and whispered, “So sorry. This will only be a second. Then we can get back to”—he waggled his index finger back and forth between the two of us—“this little thing we have going on here.”

I should bite his damn finger off. Or lick it. What the hell, Jenny?

“Yeah, see that it’s right before you bring it back to the office. Bye.” He tapped the
screen on his phone and shoved it into his jacket pocket, then grinned at me. “Are we

finished here?”

“I bet you hear that a lot from the ladies.” I tapped my foot on the ground. He picked the wrong woman to be an asshole to. I didn’t care how expensive his Armani whatever suit cost, being a jerk wasn’t acceptable. Who did he think he was?

“It’s usually more like, ‘I want you to finish here.’ ” He pointed at my chest and smiled a toothy grin.

I remained unmoved by his misogynistic sarcasm. His smile widened.

“No?” He drew out the syllable. “Here?” He canted his head sideways and pointed at my mouth, then chuckled. “What’s wrong? You can dish it out but can’t take it?”

I sighed and gave him an obviously fake laugh. “Oh, I can take it. I just prefer an entrée. Not an appetizer.” I shot a glance to his crotch.

He leaned down next to me, his breath warm in my ear. “I can assure you, there’s plenty to eat down there.” He rose back up and examined me once more, as people made their way around us. “And it looks like you’ve been starving yourself for a while. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have important things to do.”

“Oh, I’m sure you do. There’s a special on mani-pedis around the corner. Don’t forget your Us Weekly.”

Fucker.

“You can bet I won’t. I love the style columns. You should check them out.” His voice carried to my ears from over his shoulder.

He never turned around again. I stood there, clutching my bag to my chest. I watched him disappear into the sea of suits while my heart tried to beat its way out of my chest. I glanced down at my outfit—knee-length, charcoal pencil skirt, tight red shirt wrapped in a buttoned-up white cardigan, black pumps. Sure, it was conservative, but I wasn’t dressed like a grandmother either. He was full of shit. It wasn’t like it mattered anyway. Guys like him dated models and plastic women who spent their days at spas and driving around in their fancy paid-for cars.

Powerful men like him didn’t like to be challenged by some conservatively dressed twenty-five-year-old bookkeeper, whose ideal Friday night consisted of her father falling asleep early, and then laughing at Jimmy Fallon’s late-night antics. There was something about the mystery man though. His snide attitude and wit made my skin crawl, but I’d have been lying to myself if I said it didn’t get me hot and bothered at the same time. He was right about one thing—it had been a while.

There wasn’t time to analyze the encounter with the beautiful asshole, so I momentarily scrubbed him from my memory and started toward the coffee cart, before glancing at my watch.

Shit! My interview was in three minutes. Not having the slightest clue of where I was, I

flew down the sidewalk and inhaled a huge breath of air as I passed in front of the coffee cart.

“Thank you!”

A large whiff of the coffee aroma would have to suffice. The worker hollered back a confused, “Umm, you’re welcome!” It was quickly drowned out behind me as I stared up at the buildings for any clue as to my whereabouts. I rounded a corner and weaved through a few stilled cars in the road, and there it was.

I could hardly miss it, with the words “Mason and Associates” in huge block letters attached to the front of the building. I clutched my bag and took off. The back of my heels rubbed with every step and I could feel the blisters forming, certain they would last for weeks. I was so worried that I would step into a drain or a crack and rocket forward onto my face like a stunt double that my head bobbed up and down between the people and objects in front of me and the sidewalk as I searched for anything that could trip me up.

When I finally made it to the front of the building, I leaned against the wall for a brief moment. My lungs were ablaze as I tried to catch my breath and compose myself before entering.

You have to get this job. It’s twice the pay and perfect for you.

I pulled a makeup mirror from my bag and examined my face. One minute was all I had now, when I’d planned on being fifteen minutes early. My hair was starting to frizz, but not too badly, and a fine layer of sweat beads had formed along my hairline. I grabbed for a tissue and dabbed it on my forehead to make myself halfway presentable—well that, and to hide the fact I’d just sprinted for two blocks.

I walked through the double doors, and my heels clacked on the swirled black and white marble floor as I headed toward the receptionist. She sat behind a crescent-shaped mahogany desk, “Mason and Associates” affixed in granite block letters to the wooden wall behind it.

I started to speak but couldn’t get a word out before she held one index finger up at me and tapped on her headset with the other. “Mason and Associates.” She pointed to the row of fancy leather chairs against one of the walls. I sauntered over and took a seat, my body relaxing into the soft leather before I remembered where I was. I jerked myself up straight and fumbled through my bag once more to make sure the copy of my resume was still inside.

“Mr. Mason is in appointments all morning. I’ll send you to his voicemail.” She tapped the headset again, and something gave me the feeling she had transferred the caller before they could get another word out.

I started to stand and walk back to her, but she held up her finger at me once more, and then pointed back to the chair.

“They’ll be out for you in a minute.”

“But I didn’t even—”

“They’ll be out in a minute.”

She tapped her headset and quickly took another call. Jesus.

I took in the scenery of the lobby, all the while wondering what was beyond the walls. The doors were all closed, and it looked like they required some kind of security access to gain entry. I knew they were probably secretive about some of their dealings with clients, but I didn’t expect Area 51–style clearance to get past the receptionist.

A door swung open, and a large man in an expensive suit stepped out. He had to be six foot five at least, and was built like a football player.

“Miss Jackson?”

His voice was much softer than expected, and he flashed me a polite smile—unlike the face of the company, who was still angrily yapping away at her headset.

“Yes, that’s me.” I rose to my feet and snatched up my bag.

“Todd Ryan, senior agent.” He held out his hand and engulfed mine within it.

“Jenny Jackson.”

His hand was soft and inviting, and I got the feeling he held back so as not to crush me with his giant bear paw.

“I know. We’ve been looking forward to meeting with you.”

Really?

“Thank you. I’m looking forward to hearing what your company is all about.”

I tried my best to keep pace as my heels clacked down the hall, my blisters increasingly

painful with each step. I’d pictured something entirely different—busy people running around, screaming negotiating terms into phones, sports superstars coming in and out of the building with photographers trying to snap pictures. I definitely hadn’t expected this.

We continued down the long hallway. The eerie silence bordered on creepy and amplified every sound we made.

“We need to hurry. Bossman is meeting with you and he gets upset if we’re late.”

What? I’m meeting with the owner of the company? Compose yourself.

“I was expecting an interview with HR or a manager or something. Is this normal?” I chewed on a fingernail and stared straight ahead, at the middle of his back.

“Yes. We do things differently here. It’s a boutique agency. Mr. Mason is involved in every decision and is present at all interviews of potential employees.”

His strides were huge, at least two or three of mine. I tried to think about anything but the nerves rippling through my abdomen. Having butterflies was putting it mildly, seeing as it felt more like a flock of pigeons.

He finally came to a stop and we turned through a door. It opened up into a giant open room two floors high. A large bull pen of cubicles filled the main floor and offices and conference rooms ran along the bottom half of the perimeter. All of the offices had large glass windows and it was easy to see inside of them.

I glanced up and there was a set of stairs running up to an office on the second floor that overlooked everything.

“This way.” Todd resumed his brisk pace next to the wall and I followed quickly at his heels. I kept glancing at the employees. They all had their heads down, pecking on

keyboards—nobody spoke to one another.

Todd stopped in front of a door and his large frame took up the entire entrance, so that I couldn’t see anyone inside. “Ethan, I have Jenny Jackson here to see you.”

Todd stepped aside and motioned for me enter the room. I took a huge breath to
calm my nerves. When I walked through the door, people in suits lined the edges of a
long conference table. I glanced to the person in the middle and my breath hitched. I

went as pale as a ghost and thought I might faint.

It was him. The asshole from the park.

Review – We Said Forever by Marie James

Ruin Me TEaserWSF Cover

We Said Forever by Marie James

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

What is meant to be will always find its way.

The giddy delight I get when I meet a new or new-to-me author’s words is BOOKWORM BLISS! That rush during that initial read is off-the-charts incredible! I just popped my Marie James book cherry that was more of an explosion because HOLY EMOTIONS!!! We Said Forever is heartwarming and heart-wrenching, a hard-fought love story, the kind that stays with you forever.

The We Said Forever Prologue broke my heart, sending it and me into a black hole in a story that sank into my soul from the start. I knew that this story would break me, and that it did. We Said Forever BROKE ME in the best way!

This tale of a fallen football star and the studious beauty beckoned me, these two opposites that attracted in every way. The blond, blue-eyed muscular, Thor-looking Blaze and the dark-haired and dark-eyed beauty with lush curves, Fallyn, were nothing alike and apart but everything together.

“I’m going to kiss you every time I see you. Before you can even utter a word or try to push me away, my lips will be on yours. As many times as I takes, until you realize you’re mine.”

HOLY HELL!!! Hot Blaze kisses Fallyn senseless. He kisses her until she cooperates. He kisses her with everything he has because she is everything to him as he is to her. Their chemistry is combustible, their passion perhaps powered by fate.

Blaze made me BURN!!! A fire lit inside of me by his smoldering kisses and words while this broken boy-inside-a-man’s heart called to me. I WAS HIS!!!

“You’re the only one I see.”

Fallyn sees the heart beating inside the broken man. Fallyn sees the real Blaze. This fallen alpha is possessive and passionate, and oh did Blaze POSSESS me!!! I was owned by this devastatingly beautiful and broken hero, Blaze. I was OWNED by We Said Forever.

The push and the pull built me up and then tore me down. Heartbreak…hope…happiness rotated like a Russian roulette wheel. The angst bled over the pages, bleeding over me, and I LOVED every tortuous and tender minute! I LOVED We Said Forever, so brilliant, broken, and beautiful.

Blaze is wading in a sea of sorrow, drowning the pain of his past with pills, depression in full swing. Can the beautiful angel save the beautiful man with the devil dancing inside his heart and stealing his soul? The man who doesn’t think he deserves love is the one who needs love the most.

“No one can love me.”

This broken and beautiful book gripped and GUTTED me, so intense and intoxicating that my emotions took over where I could do nothing but FEEL!!! I felt every word in We Said Forever. I FELT EVERYTHING!!! My heart was ripped out of my chest yet my soul swooned in a romance that touched every part of me. We Said Forever is a tale I will feel forever.

“Are you my Beauty?” I ask.

She bites the corner of her bottom lip.

“Are you my Beast?”

Rock bottom.

They say the only way to go from there is up, but what is “up” when you’re born into someone else’s rock bottom?

At ten, football became my first love. It’s what got me out of the house away from my self-destructive family. My love for football landed me at Las Vegas University with a full ride scholarship, and the orange on my jersey was my favorite color…until my eyes landed on the red dress Fallyn wore the night we met.

At twenty-one, I jumped off the cliff into the unknown the second Fallyn McIntyre danced in my arms at a party. I had the greatest girl in the world and the opportunity to play college ball every Saturday. My rock bottom was looking up, thanks to my two first loves.

Parties, sex, and football—life was perfect. But one drink too many, and my world came crashing down. When I chose pills over my second love, my head told me it was the best decision I ever made. The pills keep me warm and protect me from the distance Fallyn created. Percs don’t judge me. They make me feel alive.

Threes.

They say the best things come in threes, but one leads to a stable future, one is my salvation, and the other drags me to hell—a hell I’d willingly burn in for eternity…if it weren’t for my second love.
